Throughout every part of Thailand except for the Southern Region, there's been a continuous cold spell due to a high-pressure system covering the upper part of the country. It has spread downward to reach Central Thailand, including hitting Bangkok on December 21st, 2017. Temperatures recorded at the observatory on the peak of Doi Inthanon were as low as -5°C, which is expected to be the lowest of this year.
This cold front has spread from Northern Thailand and Issan since December 18th, and has especially been felt on Doi Inthanon which is in Chiang Mai Province. It is home to the highest mountain peak in Thailand with an elevation of 2,565 meters. The temperature began to drop recently from 3-4°C down to 1°C and then went all the way down to -2°C on December 20th. Then, on the 21st, it plummeted to -5°C at the observatory on Doi Inthanon. The staff there noticed that the surrounding area had frost around the peak's grass. For them, it was a strange sight to behold that has hardly ever been witnessed before.

Likewise for Bangkok, which experienced a rapid drop from 26-28°C earlier this month to below 20°C in the mornings. Usually there is then a gradual rise in temperature, but it's accompanied by strong winds blowing constantly throughout the day. After the sun sets, the temperature drops down again.
Though, after today is done, temperatures in all regions of Thailand will gradually increase to warm up the country due to the high-pressure system weakening. Regardless, everyone will still feel the chill a bit more; especially the people in Bangkok. Many Bangkokians remark every year, "We never get a chance to wear a thick sweater in Bangkok." Well now's your chance, enjoy!
